Plunge and Repeat: A Review of Deepest Sword

In this review, Pyroclastic_Snow explores Deepest Sword, a tongue-in-cheek platformer developed by Cosmic Adventure Squad during a 48-hour game jam.

With its escalating difficulty, cheeky humor, and clever mechanics, the game transforms a simple concept into an unforgettable (and hilarious) experience.

From dragon-slaying to sword-jabbing puns, there’s more to this tiny game than meets the eye.

“Venture deep into the Cavern of Longing. Plunge your sword deep into the dragon's heart! How deep is your resolve?”

I am 100% willing to admit that I have the sense of humor of a 13-year-old boy, so I tend to catch people on the “that’s what she said” quite often.

So, as you can imagine, Deepest Sword sure had me tickled. Made by Cosmic Adventure Squad for a 48-hour game jam, it does well for the time spent on it!

The game opens to you, a knight, with a very short (some men may say that it’s a good size, I’m sure) sword and a blacksmith urging you to “venture deep into the Cavern of Longing”. The sword you carry is a method of level traversal as swinging the sword helps you over small ledges you come across. A traveler warns of Long, the dragon, who resides in the cave atop her hoard. Once you reach her, you are tasked with plunging your sword deep into her heart. Given that your sword is not very long, she insults your length and burns you up.

The game then loops, your sword becoming longer each time as well as the cavern. With each loop, your sword also gains more weight and becomes that much more difficult to handle (so size does matter, huh?) with the overall goal of plunging your blade deep into her heart (are we so sure its her heart at this point?) and securing your cat and the hoard!

While the game has a very simple premise, the art is on point. This game also even encourages speed-running as there is a timer going for your playtime. A very good, fun, not so serious game that is free to play. Please be sure to give good ratings if you enjoy playing as much as I did, these creators definitely deserve it!
